The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund is money from the government to help young people stay in education or training after Year 11 if cost is a barrier.
What the money can be used for
The bursary helps pay for essential costs linked to education, such as:
- Travel to school or college
- Meals during the day
- Books, equipment or specialist clothing for courses
It is meant to support learning, not everyday living costs or extra activities.
Who can get it
Your child may be able to get help if they:
- Are aged 16 to 18 (or 19+ in some situations)
- Study at a school, college or training provider in England (not university)
Some young people aged 19 or over can still get support if they:
- Are continuing a course they started earlier, or
- Have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
Types of bursary
There are two types of support:
1. Bursary for vulnerable young people
- For young people who may not have financial support from home
- This can be up to £1,200 a year, depending on need
- Usually includes young people who:
- Are in care or have recently left care
- Receive certain benefits in their own name (for example Universal Credit or disability-related benefits)
2. Discretionary bursary
- For students who need financial help but don’t fall into the groups above
- Schools and colleges set their own criteria (often based on household income)
- The amount and support offered will depend on the young person’s individual needs
How it’s given
- The school or college decides who gets support and how much
- Support may be given as money, or provided directly (for example bus passes, meals or equipment)
- Each young person’s situation is assessed individually
How to apply
- Applications are made through your child’s school, college or training provider
- You may need to provide information about your household income or circumstances
Key message for parents
This fund is there to make sure young people can continue in education, even if money is tight. If you think your child may need help, it’s always worth speaking to their school or college to find out what support is available.
