English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) service is designed to support adults who want to improve their English for everyday life, work, or further study. It is ideal for learners from beginner level through to more advanced speakers who need to build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
We offer courses across a range of levels, from Entry Level for beginners through to Level 2 for more confident users. This ensures that all learners are placed in a class that matches their current ability and goals.
The courses enable participants to develop practical English skills for real-life situations such as communicating at work, accessing services, supporting their children’s education, and progressing into employment or further learning. Learners also build confidence and independence in using English in their daily lives.
Courses take place one day a week for 2 hours and are delivered both face-to-face and online depending on the level. Learners are expected to complete some regular homework to reinforce what they have learned in class, although this is designed to be manageable alongside other commitments.
Learners can progress onto higher-level courses as their skills improve, providing a clear pathway for continued development.
To apply, learners can contact our team directly:
- Phone: 01962 846193
- E-mail: adult.learning@hants.gov.uk
- Or complete an application form.
After applying, applicants are usually invited to attend an assessment or informal interview to determine their current level. They will then be placed in a suitable class or added to a waiting list if necessary.
