Alcohol misuse remains the leading risk factor for premature death, ill-health, and disability among people aged 15–49 in the UK. It is a direct cause of more than 60 serious medical conditions, including liver cirrhosis, certain cancers, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.
Drug misuse is also a critical concern, ranking as the fifth leading cause of disability and death among 15–49-year-olds in Hampshire.
Beyond health impacts, drug dealing fuels violence and organized crime. Approximately half of all homicides are linked to gangs involved in drug distribution and sales—underscoring the devastating social consequences of substance misuse.
