Supported Internship Programme

Young people walking away

What is a Supported Internship?

A Supported Internship is a special type of learning programme that takes place mostly in a real workplace. It is designed for young people aged 16–24 who have an EHCP, a Statement of SEN, or a Learning Difficulty Assessment.

The aim is to help young people build the skills and confidence they need to get a paid job in the future.

What Happens on a Supported Internship?

  • Young people will spend most of their week working at an employer, just like being in a real job.
  • They will get support from job coaches and staff to help you learn how to do different tasks.
  • They will learn new skills by doing the job, not just sitting in a classroom.

Supported internships are unpaid, and they usually last at least six months.

Wherever possible, the goal is for the young people who do a Supported Internship to move into paid work when the programme finishes.

Learning

Alongside working with the employer, young people will have a personalised study programme. This might include:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Qualifications linked to the type of work you are doing
  • Other learning that helps you prepare for adult life
