Supported Internship Programme

Young people walking away

What is a Supported Internship?

A Supported Internship is a special type of learning programme that takes place mostly in a real workplace. It is designed for young people aged 16–24 who have an EHCP, a Statement of SEN, or a Learning Difficulty Assessment.

The aim is to help you build the skills and confidence you need to get a paid job in the future.

What Will You Do on a Supported Internship?

  • You will spend most of your week working at an employer, just like being in a real job.
  • You will get support from job coaches and staff to help you learn how to do different tasks.
  • You will learn new skills by doing the job, not just sitting in a classroom.

Supported internships are unpaid, and they usually last at least six months.

Wherever possible, the goal is for you to move into paid work when the programme finishes.

Your Learning

Alongside working with the employer, you will have a personalised study programme. This might include:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Qualifications linked to the type of work you are doing
  • Other learning that helps you prepare for adult life

Everything is tailored to your needs, so you can learn in a way that suits you.

National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTI) Preparing for Adulthood has created an Easy Read guide to supported internships.
